Sesor & FCMB Partner to Give IDP Women Fresh Start in Maiduguri

Sesor and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) partnered to train and provide micro grants to 60 displaced women in Maiduguri to invest in their micro businesses and start life afresh. This is a part of our pilot rehabilitation work for women’s economic empowerment programme.

At the disbursement event on Thursday, the women received N20,000 each, having completed a 3-day financial and business management training.
This is absolutely exciting for us as we now have over 80 women benefitting from our economic empowerment programme in Lagos and Maiduguri.

Speaking with one of the women, *Rebecca Emmanuel (who is a petty trader) says “I am very happy today. I can now buy more provision from the market and sell to the people in my area.”

Another woman, *Rejoice Adamu (a food vendor), says “may God bless you people for helping us. With this money I have collected today, I can now assist my husband in providing for my family. Thank you very much” (translated from Hausa to English).

Present at the disbursement event were the Representative of the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bunu Mongunu, who gave the Borno State Government’s address; the State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr Zainab Gimba, who delivered the keynote speech; the State Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Mrs Isha Abdulrahaman; FCMB Maiduguri Branch Manager, Hajiya Fatima Zaifada, FCMB’s Media Manager (Lagos), Mr Rafiu Mohammed and Sesor’s Programme Officers, Edmond Joseph & Rendrix Berepele.

Sesor works to support survivors of emergencies through programmes in emergency relief and rehabilitation. As part of our rehabilitation work, we launched the economic empowerment programme to help disadvantaged women support their families and start life afresh.

Sesor’s empowerment model for displaced women focuses on educating them in managing their businesses and money efficiently and then giving them funds to invest in their businesses.

We will be mentoring them over the next few months to help them succeed in their businesses and we hope to support more women as time goes on.

We thank FCMB for their incredible support and are extremely happy to be working with them and the Borno State Government in making a difference.

Members of the public who would like to support more women in Maiduguri can donte into our FCMB acct – 3758767017

Next stop, Benue state!
